Gyeongbokgung Palace @ Seoul, South Korea

By : Chha

Visiting palace and gates seems to be like something that someone must do when visiting South Korea. Even the tour agency is promoting those few famous palaces in Korea. Hmm, well we did some scouting and found few famous palace but we don't have time to visit all, so we choose the most famous one which is the Gyeongbokgung (경복궁) Palace. Gyeongbokgung Palace is really a very big place. It takes us around 4 to 5 hours to walk through the palace taking photos, we did even skip some place but not much so we think 4 to 5 hours should be enough for you to visit Gyeongbokgung Palace. If you have plan to visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, then we would like to also suggest you to also visit :

Gwanghwamun Plaza (광화문광장)
Cheonggyecheon Stream (청계천)
National Folk Museum of Korea (국립민속박물관) - Inside Gyeongbokgung Palace
Tosokchon Samgyetang (토속촌 삼계탕) - Food

As these place is near to each other.

Getting There
  • Take subway to Gyeongbokgung Station.
  • Exit 5
Getting to Gyeongbokgung Palace is really easy, you just need to take the subway to Gyeongbokgung Station and then take Exit 5, it will lead you to directly beside the Gyeongbokgung Palace. There will be a small gate in front of you, walk through it and you will see the back of Gwanghwamun Gate. You won't get lost if you take Exit 5 at Gyeongbokgung Station.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is divided into many many sections and each sections has different gate with different name to it.

Hyangwonjeong (향원정) Pavilion

The weird thing about this palace is, everything from the lake to the bridge, there is a name to it. For example the Hyangwonjeong Pavilion is build on an artificial island of a lake named Hyangwonji (향원지) and the bridge that is connecting the island and the main land is named Chwihyanggyo (취향교)

Gyeonghoeru (경회루) Pavilion

Geunjeongjeon (근정전) Hall

You are allow to also view the internal of the building here in Gyeongbokgung Palace but some you may not be allowed to enter, just can view from outside the building.

The design of the palace is special and nice too.

Gyeongbokgung Palace itself is a very huge place with few different buildings inside it and also few attractions outside. Therefore we are dividing this post into a few section in order to avoid writing too long on this one single post, if not, you all will be boring reading this long text post, haha !

The place is a nice place to visit. It is worth it to have this place put down into your South Korea Travel Itinerary.
