Hiking Nan Shan @ Paya Terubung, Penang

By : Chha

Actually, i am not even sure if this is call the Nan Shan Mountain but if people talk about hiking the Nan Shan then the locals here will refer it to this route up to the Longwei Fortress Hill. Hiking here at Nan Shan is easy as there is already a properly paved road available. Cars and motorbike can ride up using this road too.

The Nan Shan route is not a famous hiking place, probably not many hikers know about this route here but it is well known for cyclist as there are a lot of cyclist will cycle up this route. The road here is very steep which makes hiking up very tiring and it hurts my legs when walking down this steep road.

As you start your hike up the Nan Shan route you can look down and see the view of Paya Terubong and as you hike up further it is more green with plants and trees.

Hiking is nice and calming, if you wish to see the sunrise, you will need to start hike early in the morning. Do remember to bring a torch light if you hike up early in the morning or late in the evening is there is no street lamp along this route and it will get really dark when the sun set. Along the route there is farm of people growing vegetables so you might bump into some farmers as they are out watering, fertilizing or harvesting their crops.

Getting There :
  1. First go to Paya Terubong, Penang then look for Nan Shan Coffee Shop.
  2. Nan Shan Coffee Shop can be easily found on Waze or Google Map.
  3. Using Nan Shan Coffee Shop as land mark, stand in front of Nan Shan Coffee Shop main entrance you will see a small junction in front of you which lead to a housing area.
  4. Walk straight into that road (Jalan Oriental 6) after a few meters in there is a junction on the left.
  5. This road on the left is the starting point for the Nan Shan route hike, you may start hiking from here.
It is my advice that you find someone who is familiar with this route to guide you through the hike if this is your first time there as there are many small road along the way that might confuse you and might cause you getting lost.
