Penang’s Gurney Drive became a little cleaner and greener as G Hotel joined hands with students, parents and community partners for World Cleanup Day 2026, turning a Saturday morning into a meaningful lesson in environmental responsibility and community spirit. Organised by Persatuan Pendidik Lestari Hijau Pulau Pinang (GREW) under the “Let’s Do It World” programme on 22 August 2026, the cleanup initiative brought together more than 200 students from SJK (C) Union, Penang Chinese Girls’ High School and SJK Convent Pulau Tikus, together with parents and volunteers. Through its CSR group, G Care, G Hotel supported the initiative as part of its Q3 Corporate Social Responsibility programme, contributing both volunteers and breakfast for the participating students.
A Morning of Community Action at Gurney Drive. The World Cleanup Day activity along Gurney Drive gave participants an opportunity to take direct action for the environment. Students, parents and volunteers worked together to collect litter scattered around the area, including cigarette butts, plastic waste and other discarded items. While the amount of waste collected highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by public spaces, the activity also demonstrated how collective action can make a visible difference. For the students involved, the cleanup was more than simply picking up rubbish. It was an opportunity to understand how individual habits and small actions can contribute towards maintaining a cleaner and more sustainable community.
G Care Supports the Next Generation. As part of G Hotel’s contribution, the hotel sponsored breakfast for the participating students. With support from the hotel’s Culinary team and G Care members, the breakfast consisted of sandwiches, fruits and beverages prepared for the volunteers before and during the morning programme. G Care volunteers also took part in the event, giving their time and energy alongside the students and parents. The initiative reflects the purpose behind G Care, a CSR group made up of G Hotel team members who share a commitment to volunteering and supporting causes that benefit society and the environment. According to Thomas Ch’ng, Director of Human Resources at G Hotel, giving back to society is an important part of the hotel’s culture. He highlighted that initiatives such as World Cleanup Day provide an opportunity for G Hotel team members to contribute meaningfully while encouraging younger generations to understand that even small actions can help create a better community.
Building a More Sustainable Penang. G Hotel’s participation in World Cleanup Day 2026 is part of its wider commitment to supporting community and sustainability initiatives throughout the year. By working alongside schools, parents and community organisations, G Care aims to encourage greater awareness of environmental responsibility while strengthening a culture of compassion, teamwork and volunteerism among G Hotel employees. The collaboration also demonstrates the important role that businesses can play beyond their everyday operations. Through partnerships with local communities and the younger generation, initiatives such as this can help create greater awareness about environmental care and inspire people to take responsibility for the spaces they share. For Penang, where public spaces such as Gurney Drive are enjoyed by both residents and visitors, keeping the environment clean is a shared responsibility. The World Cleanup Day programme provided a timely reminder that maintaining a cleaner city starts with everyone doing their part.
