InterContinental Penang Resort @ Teluk Bahang, Penang

By : Chha

A new luxury resort is coming to Penang this December 2026. InterContinental Penang Resort is scheduled to open in December 2026, marking the first InterContinental resort in Malaysia. Located along the quieter shores of Teluk Bahang, the new resort will offer a different side of Penang, away from the busy streets of George Town and closer to the rainforest, coastline and the beautiful waters of the Andaman Sea. As someone who enjoys exploring Penang and discovering new places to stay, dine and experience, this is certainly a new addition to watch out for.

A Coastal Resort in Teluk Bahang. InterContinental Penang Resort will be set between tropical rainforest and the coastline, creating a resort environment surrounded by nature. The location in Teluk Bahang is particularly interesting because it gives guests an opportunity to experience a quieter side of Penang while still being connected to the island’s famous food, heritage and culture.

The resort is designed around the idea of slowing down and enjoying the destination, with mornings surrounded by tropical greenery, days by the sea and evenings centred around Penang’s culinary and cultural character. The resort will feature 348 rooms and suites, with views overlooking the Andaman Sea, gardens or the surrounding greenery.

A Resort Inspired by Penang. One of the interesting elements of InterContinental Penang Resort is its focus on connecting the stay with the destination. The resort plans to incorporate elements of Penang’s Peranakan heritage, creative spirit, coastal traditions and island lifestyle into the overall guest experience. This means the resort is not simply designed as a place to sleep. The concept is to allow travellers to discover more of Penang through the design, dining and curated experiences available during their stay. For visitors who are travelling to Penang for the first time, this could provide another way to experience the island beyond the usual tourist attractions.

Four Restaurants and Bars. Food will also be an important part of the resort experience. InterContinental Penang Resort will have four restaurants and bars, bringing together different culinary influences.

🍽️ Sulam will showcase Peranakan flavours.
🍝 Paradiso will focus on Italian dining.
🍣 SHINKA will offer a Nikkei dining experience.
🌊 Coastal will provide oceanfront dining and sunset moments.

The combination of Penang heritage, international flavours and a coastal setting is designed to make dining part of the overall resort experience. For a food lover like me, having several different dining concepts within the resort is definitely something worth keeping an eye on.

Gemala Spa. For guests looking for relaxation and wellness, Gemala Spa will offer treatments and experiences inspired by Penang’s multicultural healing traditions together with contemporary wellness practices. The spa will be set within a tropical environment, providing a space for guests to slow down and recharge during their stay. The resort will also cater to families, with Planet Trekkers Kids Club and an interactive games room for teenagers. This makes the resort more than just a destination for couples or luxury travellers, with facilities planned for different types of guests.

Club InterContinental. Guests looking for a more private and personalised experience will also have access to Club InterContinental. The club is designed as a quieter retreat within the resort, offering a more tailored pace of travel and personalised service. For travellers who enjoy having an additional level of privacy and comfort during their hotel stay, this will be another feature to look forward to when the resort opens.

Spaces for Events and Celebrations. InterContinental Penang Resort will also have facilities for gatherings, celebrations and business events. The resort will include a Grand Ballroom, meeting rooms, boardroom and outdoor lawns, providing different options for events surrounded by the coastal setting of Teluk Bahang. With the combination of resort facilities and outdoor spaces, the property is also positioned to host weddings, celebrations, corporate gatherings and other memorable occasions.
The First InterContinental Resort in Malaysia The upcoming opening represents an important new chapter for InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in Malaysia. While InterContinental already has a presence in the country, InterContinental Penang Resort will be the brand’s first resort in Malaysia. The resort will bring the InterContinental approach to luxury hospitality into a coastal Penang setting, combining modern luxury with the island’s food, culture, nature and heritage.

According to Jeffrey F. Seward, General Manager of InterContinental Penang Resort, the resort is intended to allow guests to experience different sides of Penang throughout their stay, from the Andaman Sea and Teluk Bahang coastline to Peranakan cuisine, sunset experiences and wellness at Gemala Spa.

InterContinental Penang Resort is currently scheduled to open in December 2026.

With 348 rooms and suites, four restaurants and bars, Club InterContinental, Gemala Spa, family facilities and event spaces, the new resort is set to become another destination for travellers looking to experience Penang from a different perspective.

For me, the location is one of the things that makes this upcoming resort particularly interesting. Teluk Bahang has a completely different atmosphere from the city centre, with its rainforest, coastline and quieter surroundings. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the development and opening of InterContinental Penang Resort. It will be interesting to see how the finished resort brings together luxury hospitality with the food, culture and natural beauty that make Penang such a special destination.
