A La Carte Buffet Dinner at SPOON @ G Hotel Kelawai, Penang

Breaking the traditional way of having buffet, G Hotel is Introducing the novel way of eating A La Carte buffet dinner by serving different dish in smaller portion from their menu as per order. In that way, you may order as many as you desire and try as many different dish as you could at the A La Carte buffet. The Ala Carte buffet is now available at SPOON, G Hotel Kelawai starting from June 2019. This new theme will be offering unlimited servings of main selections of Asian, Chinese, Western as well as local delicacies which are cooked freshly in a petite portion as per your order.





This new style of Buffet allow you to mix and match your favorite dish. Make your order for the main courses as much as you can devour and enjoy the quality food with your friends and family. The Western course featuring the finest you could expect from the culinary team including ribeye steak, lamb cutlet, chicken cordon bleu, seafood bouillabaisse with garlic choucroute, salmon en papillote with capers and duck confit with mashed potato and apple salad. It is interesting to see how all these big dish is now prepared in a mini size buffet style.



Seafood bouillabaisse with garlic choucroute is a French cuisine that stood the test of time and became a signature dish. This slow cooked seafood stew is made of mussels, fish and prawns. The onions, leeks and garlic were first cooked on a slow heat. Then, the tomatoes and spices such as bay leaves, orange peel, basil, fennel and saffron together with fish stock were added in and bring to a boil for 2 hours. The salty and sour taste of bouillabaisse will whet your appetite, leaving you wanting for more. With so much effort put in to prepare the Seafood bouillabaisse with garlic choucroute, this is definitely one of the signature dish from the menu.




Another French dish that is highly recommended by G Hotel Chef is the duck confit with mashed potato and apple salad. The duck is marinated overnight with salt, thyme, orange juice and cinnamon sticks. It is then seared in a hot skillet and served with mashed potato and apple salad. The well marinated duck is soft and juicy and with just a bite, the meat falls off the bone with such tenderness.


Next, the Asian menu will have assam pedas oxtail, red curry duck with lychee and pineapple, fried rice with minced chicken and Thai basil, rendang lamb shank and Thai soup noodle for those who would like to have a taste of spiciness. Some of the dish is serve with small portion of rice, making it a classic Malaysian dish.



Be amazed by the fusion style rendang lamb shank where the chef uses the homemade spices made of onion, lemongrass, dry chillies, gula Melaka and garlic to marinate the lamb shank for 2 hours. The lamb shank is first pan seared until all the sides have turned brown before added into the rendang sauce to boil further in a low heat until the meat is tender. The coconut milk and pandan leaves were then added to lend a unique taste and aroma for the dish. This dish is served with white rice.



The next item on the A La Carte buffet menu is the hotly served Assam Pedas Oxtail which is Malaysian all time favourite dish. The oxtail is braised for 2.5 hours with mixed pastes, onions, garlic, laksa leaves, ginger flowers, shrimp paste, assam water and seasoning. This sour and spicy oxtail is so luscious and addictive that one cannot resist picking it up and sucking the bones. The sour and spicy is appetizing.


Last but not least, the Chinese cuisine comes with the choices of roasted chicken with kerabu mango sauce, Thai beef hor fun, baby kailan with oyster sauce and stir-fried tiger prawn with Sichuan bean sauce. The Thai Beef Hor Fun is my personal favorite, it taste just like those famous hawker fried koey teow in Penang.


If you love seafood, G Hotel got you covered as well, for seafood lovers, you will be in for a treat with the stir fried tiger prawn with Sichuan bean sauce. The tiger prawns are stir fried with the thick Sichuan sauce that is sweet and spicy together with shallots and gingers. This classic Chinese restaurant dish will give you a finger licking good moment.



Roasted chicken with kerabu mango sauce is also a fusion style dish that offers a unique taste that one can not find it elsewhere, especially in A La Carte style like this. The chicken is roasted for 30 minutes together with the homemade mango sauce and a hint of curry. The sauce is specially made by G Hotel talented chefs with their secret recipe, paired with the appetizing sour kerabu, giving you a mouthwatering treat on every bite.


Since all the food at the A La Carte buffet is serve hot as per order, the mise en place for all these A La Carte main courses are prepared earlier to cater to a great demand of order. You may also watch the chefs cook your food at the live action station, enticing your taste buds to sample the freshly cook food from the hot wok. Each order will take less than 10 minutes to cook. The dishes will be served at bite size and some at a size of one third from a person’s normal eating portion. This is to make space for you to eat and sample all the varieties offered from the buffet menu. And of course, you are allowed to keep ordering your favourite dishes as many as you can eat or perhaps challenge your friends or family to see who can sample the most number of items from the menu, haha !









Salad bar, fruits station, appetizers, cold cuts, cheese station, soups and dessert counter are all available for self service to kick start the dinner while waiting for the talented chefs to whip up the hot dishes from the kitchen.





















To make things more interesting, be one of the first few to experience the first in Penang Dessert Table to end your dinner on a sweet note. Dessert Table, which is a very unique way of eating the dessert off the table as the chef paints your dessert on the table for a visually artistic, instagrammable yet palate pleasing way of eating. The chef artistically paints on the table with some of the premium chocolates such as white chocolate namelaka, Maracaibo orange 84%, whipped chocolate jenda, milk chocolate opalys, white passion coulis, bitter chocolate toffee, dark soil and chocolate peanut gianduja. Once the artwork is completed, you may then take some photos and start eating the sweets off the table. I find this something interesting and unique. Priced at RM 50.00 per person, it is available with a booking of 12 persons onwards on every night from Sunday to Thursday.




SPOON at G Hotel Kelawai reminiscent of a French Bistro comes with 120 seating capacity that plays host to a myriad of cuisines.
