Xiangcun Chaihuo Ji | 乡村柴火鸡 @ Summer Skye, Bayan Lepas, Penang

By : Chha

I was out looking for food as i always does. Driving around Penang island then ended up at Summer Skye. This little shop here at Summer Skye caught my eyes so i decided to park my car and get out to have a closer look inside.

Interestingly, Xiangcun Chaihuo Ji cook the food you order right in front of you at your table so you can actually request to control the amount of ingredient they put in when cooking it. You can also see the staff in action cooking your meal. The wok is place at every table so that you can eat your food directly out from the wok your food is cooked in. Here at Xiangcun Chaihuo Ji they cook their food using the traditional charcoal way by placing a lot of charcoal under the wok which is also under the table. You won't feel the heat from the charcoal but the smell of the food smell so nice and is making me crazy hungry waiting for the food to be cook.

Food here is customizeable allowing you to control the quantity and type of food that you prefer. You have the flexibility to mix and match between Free Range Chicken or Fish or Pork Leg + Potato and Beancurd or Beancurd and Bok Choy or Corn and Siew Pak Choy. Confusing right ? what is exactly what happen to me too, i end up letting the waitress there guide me through the ordering process, haha !

Free Range Chicken + Potato and Beancurd RM 68.00

I ended up ordering the Free Range Chicken + Potato and Beancurd which cost RM 68.00. The Free Range Chicken is actually a combination of different part of the chicken with no internal organs. What comes along with it is the garlic, onion, ginger and few different types of chilies.

The food that i order are all dump into one big wok and cook together with some sauce, soup and other ingredients to add taste to it. The food here is tasty, i like the combination that i choose where the Chicken, Potato and Beancurd are well mix together. The dish a spicy because of all the different chilies being mix together in the wok when cooking.

The one thing that i like is that, as the food is still boiling in the wok, i can start to pick up the cooked food and start eating. I order rice so that i can eat the dish together with the rice. The dish that i order is actually more than enough for two people. The waitress will walk over to my table from time to time to check on the food making sure that the food is in good condition, making sure that the food is not burn, the soup does not dry up or the fire is not too big. Since this dish is being cook using charcoal, it is not easy to control the fire, most of the time, the waitress will just add soup to the dish to make sure that it does not burn up.

Rice RM 2.00

Longan or Herbal Tea RM 2.50

The drinks here is simple but refreshing. Overall, this is a good experience for me, their service is good and food is tasty too. Environment is comfortable but the extensive smoke from the cooking at every table can be a problem as it might makes your cloths and hair smells like food, haha !!
