Officially launch just a month ago, Ascott Gurney Penang is now ready to welcome everyone to indulge in their Citarasa Nusantara Ramadan Buffet in conjunction with the Ramadan fasting month at their best Timur Coffee House.
Kambing Golek
The main star for the Ramadan Buffet dinner is definitely their Kambing Golek. This Ascott Specialty Kambing Golek is the most eye catching highlight at the start of the buffet line. This is the signature of Ascott Gurney Junior Sous Chef. The whole lamb is coated with a distinctive special western marinade which injects flavour into the meat. To serve, the Chef adds choice of BBQ Sauce, Garlic Sauce and Mint Sauce, perfect accompaniment to the richness of the lamb.
Soup Gearbox
A plate of some Kambing Golek and a bowl of hot Soup Gearbox is the best way to break fast after a day long of fasting. This bowl of hot Soup Gearbox comfort the hungry tummy. This Soup Gearbox is made by boiling huge pieces of knuckle joints for more than 4 hours with potatoes, carrots and locally sourced traditional herbs and spices. Served piping hot, the portion of soft meat and cartilage with the gelatinous bone marrow is served in a bowl. The Chef use traditional way in preparing this Soup Gearbox giving it a very unique traditional touch of local flavours, the Chef pays homage to his family’s recipe through this dish.

After an appetizing opening to fasting with the Kambing Golek and Soup Gearbox, it is then time to dig into their spreads of mains which include Daging Masak Kicap Hitam, Sweet and Sour Prawn, Telur Dadar Kampung, Toasted Mussel in Persillade Style, Sayur Campuran Dengan Mushroom, Sayur Lodeh, Ikan Kari dengan Bendi, Ayam Goreng Berempah and some rice. These mains are best mix together for some interesting mix of flavour. Guest can always choose to have some hot soup to go with the mains, soup that is available here is the Soup Soto Ayam.

Other than soup and the mains, there is also some small bites local food that you definitely interest guest and satisfy the hungry tummy after a day long of fasting. There are some Satay with Peanut Sauce for everyone to try, Roti Murtabak, Roti Canai and the Malaysian favorite Bubur Lambuk accompanied with condiment like Spring Onion, Serunding Daging, Serunding Ayam and Bawang Goreng to gives the Bubur Lambuk more flavours.

Another one of Ascott Gurney Penang Chef signature dish is ther Penang Asam Laksa is a mandatory item for the buffet. The popular dish is served with rice noodles, shredded fish and sliced cucumber, onion, and lettuce. With its thick broth authentically prepared from local spices, tamarind and fish flakes, guest can experience the marriage of sour, sweet, spicy and salty flavours in a bowl. Their Chef also quotes proudly that Asam Laksa is uniquely paired with his customized shrimp paste, where their Chef adds special sauces instead of water to achieve a thick consistency.

To end the buffet, having a good dessert is really nice. Looking at Ascott Gurney Penang's dessert section, there are a lot of different cakes, ice cream, pudding and fruits to choose from. It is Chef recommendation to try their silky smooth Tau Fu Fah or soybean pudding by their Sous Chef. While usually eaten warm, Ascott Gurney Penang Chef rendition of this dessert is served chilled and is incredibly soft and smooth. The silky smooth Tau Fu Fah best goes with either clear sweet syrup infused with pandan or with brown sugar. Enjoy some nice cold drinks too while you are at it.
