Hiking Telok Kampi @ Penang National Park, Penang

By : Chha

I know its a bit late for me to blog about this right now but if you are preparing to Climb Mount Kinabalu then i feel, every bit of information and training is crucial and important. With this, i am adding another hiking route in Penang to my blog. This time, we will hike all the way up to Telok Kampi Beach via Pantai Keracut. Hiking from the entrance of Penang National Park to Pantai Keracut is not hard.

The moment you see this bridge, you will know that you are entering Pantai Keracut, haha ! Pantai Keracut is a nice place .. the beach is nice and i love the sea too, we didn't stay here for long as we need to continue hike up to Telok Kampi Beach.

Hiking up to Telok Kampi is slightly harder than the route to Pantai Keracut, there are more up hill climb and steps.

The view at Telok Kampi Beach is really nice, the sand is different .. maybe more fine .. and less people hike up here too, so you can have a quiet moment resting and enjoy the view of nice sandy beach there.

It takes me around 3 hours 57 minutes to slowly walk all the way up to Telok Kampi via Pantai Keracut trail and down again to the Penang National Park with distance of 10.95 km

Tom Yam : Mall's Cafe @ Prangin Mall, Penang

By : Chha

I've been to this cafe several times. Well this is not a new place but just realize that they recently renovate the place. This time they renovate the cafe and set a theme to it, which is the Maneki Neko cat or the prosperity cat we call it, hahahaha !

Mall's Cafe is a very simple cafe selling tom yam noodles and they also allow customers to choose their own ingredient but of course, every ingredient are charge differently, so every bowl of tom yam noodles have different price.

There are a lot of items that you can choose from.

Located inside of Prangin Mall, the Mall's Cafe is not hard to find.

DCOVA @ Logan Heritage, Penang

By : Chha

Well i guess DCOVA does not need any further introduction as it is already well know especially for cafe lovers here in Penang Island.

Located inside UNESCO Heritage Building along Bishop Street, DCOVA is a small but nice cafe to dine in. There might not be a lot of seating area inside but the environment is soothing and nice.

Before i went to DCOVA, i heard that their Creme Brulee which only cost RM13.90 is really nice and yummy but to my disappointment, their Cerme Brulee was sold out, sob sob ! So i have to settle for other food instead.

Ebiko Alfredo RM 23.90
(Ebiko tossed in DCOVA own version of creamy Alfredo sauce and served with saute prawns)

I love the Ebiko, haha ! the spaghetti mix really well with it and there is a lot of prawns in this plate of Ebiko Alfredo.

Carbonara DCOVA RM 20.90
(Pasta, eggs and generous chunks of back bacon come together in this ultimate Italian favorite)

The Carbonara is yummy, uhhh .. especially the egg .. ! i like it alot, haha !

Overall, DCOVA is a nice place to dine in, the food is nice and the environment is nice too. Service is good but we will need to line up at counter to make our order then they will serve it to you. It's worth a try to visit DCOVA, so go go ! haha ... if you got the chance, go try their Cerme Brulee and tell me how it taste, haha !

Day 2 : Climbing Mount Kinabalu @ Sabah, Malaysia

By : Chha

zZzZzZzZz ... RING !!!!! We were all soundly asleep .. and suddenly the alarm clock ring ... its was 1.30am and we all have to wake up to the agonizing sound of the rooster crow from my friends handphone of which he don't even know how to turn it off, hahaha ! Well, since i am already awake, i might as well get ready for the hike up the summit of Mount Kinabalu which starts at 2.30am. Bath is by using icy cold water. Then at around 2am, we were all ready for supper.

We had our supper at the same place we took our dinner last night, which is in the same building as our dorm.

After our quick supper, we all went straight for the hike which was suppose to start at 2.30am but due to some delay, our group start hike at 2.45am. Day two hike is slightly different from day one because the route we are using now, is actually newly open route after the 2015 Sabah earthquake that struck Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia with a moment magnitude of 6.0 on 5 June 2015, which lasted for 30 seconds. The earthquake damage the old route of 2.7km therefore a new route of 3km is recently open for hikers to hike up to the summit of Mount Kinabalu.

Hiking up to the summit of Mount Kinabalu starting from Laban Rata, a lot of people fear of altitude sickness and the leck of oxygen. We were advice by our Mountain Guide to not force ourself to continue to hike if we feel dizzy, if we throw up and if we don't feel well when hiking. Some of us did prepare some altitude sickness pills but i did not take it as it will give some side effect to certain people like face numbness or hand numbness. Instead I took two panadols for my head ache of waking up too early, hahahaha ! Well, i guess the panadols help because it will help prevent you from becoming dizzy and headache during the hike and in turn preventing you from vomiting.

The weather is really cold at 2.45am when we start hiking, so for today i wear 1 heat tech cloths as my base wear, 1 t-shirt, 1 jackets, a water proof wind breaker, a long pants, a head cover and a head lamp. Oh, not to forget a pair of glove too as we need to pull on rope when he hike up steep area on the mountain. If you don't hold on to the rope, you will have difficulty climbing up the mountain, so a pair of good glove is necessary to keep your hand warm and for climbing ropes.

Sayat - sayat is the last check point for Mount Kinabalu which is roughly around 1.7km hike away from Laban Rata. Everyone MUST reach this check point before 5am, IF NOT, then you won't be allow to proceed hiking to the summit or the people here call it the Low's Peak.

Hiking from this point on is really hard because of the thin layer of oxygen. I basically have to stop hiking to take rest only after around 10 steps of hiking. Unlike hiking on normal trail, where i can walk non-stop for few hundred meters.

I manage to reach the summit at around 5.45am, just in time for sunrise and the view is breath taking ! The weather is nice and cold .. the view is awesome .. all the hard work, blood, sweat and tears are all worth it ! yehhhhh ... haha .. of course not blood, i over exaggerate a little there, haha ! But really, it is all worth it for such an amazing view from the top of Mount Kinabalu.

While hiking up Mount Kinabalu you will notice a few famous spot like the South Peak, which is the image at the back of Malaysia old RM 1.

The Donkey's Ears .. which was slightly damage from the previous earthquake.

We were allowed to stay at the summit only for awhile and were directed to leave the area after that. Everyone need to descend to Laban Rata area before 10.30am for check out. If we check out late, we will be charge additional RM100 per hour. Therefor we have to rush down to Laban Rata to have our breakfast.

Every hikers will have to register themselves at the Sayat - sayat check point by using the badge with our name on it which was given to us on our first day of hiking at Kinabalu Park. Without this badge, you are not considered as a hiker on Mount Kinabalu. Your entrance and exit is recorded by using this badge for safety purpose. If you successfully hike to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, you can order your certificate at Sayat - sayat check point and later collect them at Kinabalu Park office before 5pm because that is the time when the office close. So it is another series of rushing down the mountain for us in order to reach Kinabalu Park in time for lunch which ends at 4.30 pm and Kinabalu Park office for our certificate.

Luckliy descending mountains is actually easier than hiking up. It takes us around 4 hours to decent a 6km route, the exact same route as hiking up. With this meal at Kinabalu Park, this marks the end of my Mount Kinabalu Climbing Adventure ! haha .. It is really fun to have a bunch of friend to go crazy with you along the journey of Climbing Mount Kinabalu. The experience and the adventure gain here hiking is really invaluable. So go go go ! Give it a try to Climb Mount Kinabalu .. it will be an experience you will never forget, maybe just maybe, you will even fall in love with hiking ! You never know ... hahahaha ! Till then ~~ Signing Off ~~ Jay Chha !!

Day 1 : Climbing Mount Kinabalu @ Sabah, Malaysia

By : Chha

After a good night sleep, it is finally time to start the first day of hiking up Mount Kinabalu. Well, i was kinda excited and at the same time worried that it will be really tough. Anyway, it is time to go, you got to do what you got to do ! Woke up, get ready and went for breakfast at Balsam Buffet Restaurant.

Our hike start at the Timpohon Station, you can choose to start hike at any time between 7am until 10.30am. Before the hike, we meet with our Mountain Guide and also to weight our bagpack. For us, our Mountain Guide is our 'Portal' who help us to carry our bagpack up Mount Kinabalu. We need to pay the 'Portal' base on every kg that he carry and our bagpack weighted 21kg at that time.

Getting to the Timpohon Station, we took shuttle van from our homestay in Kinabalu Park.

Hiking at Mount Kinabalu there are few simple rules that we must follow, there are two that i remember clearly which are, do not litter and do not simply pee anywhere (*note to guys), hahaha !

The moment i walk through the Timpohon Station gate, the first thing i see it this ... !

STEPS !!! so so so many steps ... i almost give up ! hahaha ... but then i carry on anyway .. and it is really OMG ! The further i hike, the more steps there is.

Steps ! and more steps !

Steps again ! I was thinking, when will all these steps end ??

Steps are making me cry !

And its when i thought, that there are no more steps to hike on, things seems to get worst .. !

Rocky mountain road !!

Steep slopes ! More and more are waiting .. !

Along the hiking trail, there are few rest place for us to had our lunch, take rest and to go toilet if needed.

Our lunch is actually a pack of lunch box consist of chicken wing, sandwich, apple, a small bottle of mineral water and egg which were distributed to us before we leave Balsam Buffet Restaurant after our breakfast. The toilet at every rest place is really smelly and dirty because of water rationing.

Though the hike is really hard for me, but the moment you see scenery as beautiful as this, you will feel that all the hard work and effort is seriously worth it !

Today i only wear a T-Shirt, a jacket and a short pants because the weather here on first day of hiking is not really cold, there are times where i need to take out my jacket as well when there are bright sunshine shining. I think, it is fine for you to wear just T-Shirt and a short pants if temperature of around 20 to 15'c does not affect you much.

It took us around roughly 6 hours to finish 6 km of hiking for the first day, with rough terrain all the way up to our last stop for today which is at Laban Rata.

Laban Rata will be the place where we stay for the night while getting ready for the second day of hiking up to the summit of Mount Kinabalu. Dinner at Laban Rata finish at 7pm, by the time i reach Laban Rata, it is already around 5.30pm, i was really tired and hungry at the same time.

View Of Our Laban Rata dorm stay from Top.

The place for dinner is also in the same building of our dorm for the night. This will also be the place for our Breakfast and Lunch at Laban Rata.

The food here is just so-so i would say, but since i am really hungry, i eat without even tasting, hahaha ! just whack and eat ! toooo hungry to even think .. !! You can refill your water here in this restaurant but but but ! Only hot water available. The environment is nice .. i like it here and the temperature outside is cold, at this point, i really need a jacket, especially when walking outside of building at night.

Sun set view from Laban Rata restaurant.

Dorm reception and Goodie Back Shop

The dorm reception is actually in the same bulding at the restaurant where we had our dinner, so it is really convenient for us to move around without the need to get out from the building to the cold environment outside.

Dorm at Laban Rata is small but it is well managed and comfortable to sleep too. The bed is good but the room is a little bit hot, but you can open the window is you want, then it will turn to really cold, hahaha ! problems problems .. haha !

Toilets at the dorm does have hot water but only at certain time of day .. so means you will have to plan your time when to take bath, the same goes to water for shower, may it be cold or hot water, there is time for it.

Went to bed at around 8pm, yah, its really early i would say .. but we have to as we are waking up really early tomorrow morning for our final hike ! Up to the summit of Mount Kinabalu !!
